Massage is thought to
be the oldest form of medical therapy practiced on the human body. The
different types of massage and related techniques originate
from ancient civilizations and their traditional
customs from ancient Greek and Rome to ancient India and China.
In a recent survey sponsored by the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). Consumers were questioned as to their use of massage for pain relief. The findings were very interesting and informative. In this survey the following results were received:
- Women selected massage therapy as their first
choice when asked what gives them the most relief from pain (24%
versus 22% who chose medications as their first pain-relief
choice).
- Men placed medications first (24 percent) and massage second (19 percent).
- Massage therapy was determined to be three times more effective
at relieving pain for 18 to 24-year-olds than medication
(34% preferred massage as compared to 10% who preferred medication).
- 98% of 25 to 34-year-old respondents believe that massage
is an effective way to relieve pain. Furthermore, 37% of them have
already had a massage to relieve pain, while 48 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds
have used massage to
relieve pain.
